Style Guide: Notting Hill Carnival

If walking around a carnival, while listening to diverse reggae, dub, hip-hop, soca and dancehall melodies, while soaking up the last of the summer sunshine does sound like your cup of tea, then you need to head down to the Notting Hill Carnival this bank holiday.

You may be wondering what to wear to London’s most attended street party? Anatomic & Co has created a style guide for carnival goers, as well as giving you a taste of what to expect.

What is the Notting Hill Carnival?

Starting out in 1964 as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their cultures and traditions in London, the Notting Hill Carnival has since transformed into the biggest street festival in Europe.

The original idea of the carnival pays respect to the parades and celebrations which were rife throughout the Caribbean during the early 19th century.

Today the carnival goes further than this, welcoming all people from all cultures and communities to enjoy the colourful sights, mixture of melodies and festive party that takes place every August bank holiday weekend.

What to Expect:

At the carnival you will find some incredible street food, with hundreds of different cuisines to choose from. The Notting Hill Carnival is also acclaimed for its unique Caribbean music, steel bands, exhilarating live performances and calypso rhythms.

What to wear at the carnival:

As you’ll be on your feet for most parts of the day, you’ll want to opt for an outfit that is equal parts fun and functional. It’s entirely up to you whether you want to embrace the vibrant colours of the celebrations or take preference to a more refined and casual outfit.

One style you can opt for is a more rugged look, pairing an earth-toned or camo jacket with a pair of well-tailored jeans. Not only will this help you stand out in a crowed of 2 million people, but also give you plenty of pockets for all your carnival accoutrements.

The Notting Hill Carnival is all about embracing culture, so adding a few accessories can help add a little diversity to your outfit.

What shoes to wear at the carnival:

Open shoes or sandals are an absolute carnival no-go, and since you’ll be walking for long periods of time, it’s best to go for a trusty pair of trainers or comfortable boots. If you’re in need of a new pair of trainers or boots that will provide you with all-day comfort, we recommend the following styles:

Classico (Available in Smooth Havana or Smooth Marinho)

Santista (Available in Full-grain Cognac or Full-grain  Chumbo)

Bilac (Available in Full-Grain Troy and other classic colours)

Pedras Vintage Rust

Colorado Mustang Tobacco (Available in many other colours)

Offering complete comfort and exuding elegance and style, our versatile range of trainers and boots never fall out of favor and they can complement a range of outfits.

What makes men’s shoes attractive?

Along with a well tailored suit and a classic watch, there are a few pieces in a man’s wardrobe that bring a touch of luxury to the everyday. There’s a certain majesty to a beautifully crafted pair of men’s shoes, something genuine and substantial; the curves, the patterns, the crisp sole and the shine.

Here are 3 key components that make a shoe attractive.

1. The shape of the shoe

First off, the shape of the shoe is what makes it beautiful. No matter how right you get everything else, if the shape of the shoe is not right, the shoe is unattractive.

Gentleman with a good eye for style are often attracted to bespoke samples as they are made to have shape, quite rightly so, being as the foot has shape. A shoe that is not simply a block and curves in all the right places, not just in the instep and the arch is highly attractive. The more that you show these natural curves, the more elegant the shoe will look.

2. The design of the shoe

The design of the shoe includes the pattern. The way a seam line detail lies on the canvas of a shoe makes a big difference. The slights of details in design will influence the overall presentation of the final product. The creation of the wing cap i.e. how wide or narrow the W shape of the cap is, how the point comes together and how the lines fall down on the side of the shoe all contribute to the overall beauty of a shoe.

When it comes to the pattern, we often do not know why we find the shoe so attractive, but we do for the most part because of how that pattern sits on the shape of the shoe. This is often what separates a beautifully crafted shoe from the amateurs.

3. The materials of the shoe

Realistically, perfect leather that is blemish free and that doesn’t crease is non-existent. Slight marks and variations in the surface colour and texture of the leather are an inherent natural quality. This makes each individual shoe a unique work of art, and something discerning owners cherish when buying leather.

Fine quality leather is great, but the best thing about leather is that it can be manipulated, where as the shape and pattern cannot be changed once the shoe is made.

Another key component to attractive men’s shoes is the upkeep of them. Protect and care products help ensure your shoes remain in tip-top condition whether you choose to wear them all day, every day or just on special occasions. There are not too many things in this world that are more beautiful than a well polished pair of shoes.

The Tucano brogue: Grades of shoe craftsmanship

A modern design, with its eye on tradition, the Tucano brogue is a versatile shoe that can be dressed up or down, and the same style takes on a different appearance with a different finish (leather and suede).

An exceptionally well crafted brogue, the Tucano was designed in England and handcrafted using the finest materials in Brazil. The shoe features a punched toe medallion as well as sheepskin linings and a 100% rubber outsole.

A shoe built solely around design excellence and craftsmanship, here’s a look into Anatomic & Co’s Tucano brogue.

The broguing and stitching

The Tucano is easily recognisable by the broguing pattern that runs along the edges of the shoe. The iconic pattern of holes and perforations that are punched into the brogue characterise the edge and bring the shoe to life.

The broguing is complimented by the shoe’s unique stitching, which features waxed thread for waterproofing.

The diversity of the shoe

The best brogues are no longer just worn in brown, but in a myriad of shades and materials that has given this most quintessential of footwear a pleasing new lease of life. There’s no finer example of this than the Tucano brogue.

Available in both leather and suede options, and an array of colours, the Tucano is an elegant solution that bridges the gap between formality and casual wear.

If you prefer a traditional staple, you can go for the leather Cognac Brown or Classic Black options. Or, if you’re looking for something more exuberant, you can opt for the Tucano Suede Navy with yellow laces or the leather Sky Blue option.

The comfort of the shoe

Your eyes may be the window into your soul, but these shoes are as good on the inside as they are on the outside. Featuring Anatomic Gel Technology, genuine sheep leather lining and cushioned insoles means this brogue will give you all-day comfort.

What’s more is that the shoe features a contrasting England Rubber Gel sole, which is constructed for durability and cushioned for comfort.

As a whole, the Tucano is a robust, stylish and classic brogue that offers serious comfort. With so many colours to choose from, the shoe can be worn with both formal attire and casual outfits. This easy-to-wear brogue is a must for every stylish gentleman’s wardrobe.

The Tucano range now feature two new colour options: Mustang Black and Mustang Tobacco.

4 shoes that will give you the rugged gentleman look

Rugged fashion looks great on any gentleman, so long as they get it right. No-nonsense, utility minded fabrics like flannel, canvas and leather give your wardrobe an earthy feel, while the right hairstyle and accessories help take your style to the next level.

The Rugged Look:

You may be wondering what exactly a rugged gentleman looks like?

Well, he’s an alpha male and knows how to get things done. He is a descendent from the hard-as-nails men who came before him – the adventure seekers, the blue collar workers, the outdoor enthusiasts – and adapts them to 21st century life.

A rugged gentleman’s wardrobe is highly versatile and never puts form before function. He manages to strike a sophisticated balance between smarter attire and casual wear. He creates his own identity.

Items of clothing:

The rugged look is built around the following items of clothing:

– Denim jeans
– Trousers
– Shirts
– Jackets (earth-toned pieces)
– Knitwear
– Accessories
– Shoes (we like to think this is the most important item of any outfit)

Put them together however you please to make rugged fashion your own.

Rugged shoe styles:

Nova (Available in Smooth Coffee and full-Grain Black)
Leather lace up boots are a staple in every rugged gentleman’s wardrobe. The Nova men’s leather lace up boot is a fine example, which also feature silky soft sheepskin linings. So while they may look tough on the outside, they’re a homely treat on the inside.

Keep the cuff on those jeans rolled up to show off the beautiful brogueing and detailed stitching.  Throw on a coat or jacket that is a neutral and earth-toned colour to complete your look.

Pedras (Available in Vintage Rust)
On the outside, these Pedras leather lace up boots create a brisk, no-nonsense attitude. On the inside, the sheepskin linings create warm and cosy feelings.

Featuring a gutsy non-slip rubber tread, they’re the perfect footwear attire for long autumn walks.

Colorado (Available in Mustang Tobacco and Mustang Black)
Bolster your rugged wardrobe with the Colorado men’s leather chukka boots – a staple weekend go-to.

Ideal for the fashion-forward man, you can wear these boots with slim-fit tailored denim jeans and a field jacket or trench coat that is tough and functional.

Regalo (Available in Vintage Castor and Full-Grain Brown)
A shoe for no-nonsense men, the Regalo leather lace up boot is perfect for the active man. Lightweight and durable, an all-weather-conquering rubber sole gives these shoes an off-road look and feel.

The outfit that you pair with these shoes doesn’t have to be ‘perfect’. Embrace the wrinkles, the frays, the holes and the wear and tear.

All the soles of Anatomic shoes are made with Anatomic Gel Technology. There isn’t any gel in the soles but the soles are made of a rubber material mixed with a special gel (our secret ingredient) which makes the soles of the shoes incredibly flexible, bouncy and comfortable.

The soles and insoles also have a memory, so once you take your shoes off and leave them to rest, they go back to their original shape ready to look after your feet the next day.
