4 ways to clean and protect your leather shoes

Taking care of your leather shoes is more than just making sure they look good, which is reason enough to take care of them. However, it’s also about preserving and adding to the life of your leather shoes.

Leather shoes are highly sensitive to water and chemicals, as the leather can be easily damaged.

By taking care of your leather shoes, you will extend their lifespan and keep them looking like new for longer.

Here are a 4 ways to clean and protect your leather shoes…

  1. Regularly moisturize your shoes

To keep your leather shoes looking new, you need to moisturize them on a regular basis. Similar to human skin, leather needs proper care every now and then.

By moisturizing your leather shoes regularly with high-quality oil leather care, they will appear more nourished with a light shine.

  1. Steer clear of water

Water is leather’s worst enemy. It is highly important to apply a water repellent to your leather shoes before you wear them. This way, they will not get dirty or stained if water does happen to come into contact with the leather.

Over time it will be challenging to avoid coming into contact with water, however if you make use of the repellent you will decrease the chances of damage.

When it comes to weatherproofing your shoes, remember that different products serve different purposes. A beeswax product works well in wet conditions, and does not get absorbed into the leather, sticking to the surface for a long period of time.

  1. Use the right shoe protection products

When using shoe polish, it’s highly important that you use the identical colour to your shoe; otherwise you could stain your shoes for good.

It is recommended that you make use of a cream based polish, however, do not overdo it as this can affect the quality, texture and aspect of your leather shoes.

  1. Don’t forget to take care of your laces

Lastly, leather shoelaces need special care too. Remove the laces from your shoes before using shoe care products on them. If the laces are in a bad condition, it’s better to replace them than to clean them.

These 4 simple tips should help you protect your leather shoes over the years. Remember to avoid wearing them during rainy times, clean and moisturize them constantly, and use the right protective products for your leather shoes.

Pairing your feet with the right shoe style

Feet take a tremendous amount of pressure throughout the day, especially for those who work in professions that require a lot of standing or walking in and out of the office.

Shoes that do not take on the correct shape of your feet can exacerbate the issue, and in fact, improper footwear is one of the main causes of discomfort, especially when it comes to toe pain.

There are many types of feet in the world, many of which would not be labeled as ‘normal’ yet all of them are!

Anatomic & Co takes a look into the 3 main types of feet and identifies the style of shoes that will best suit each foot type.

high arch

High Arch

Many cultures, such as those from South America as well as Europe (particularly British people) suffer from high insteps. This means that the person has a high arch as seen in the above image.

Ultimately if your foot takes on this shape, you will require a high volume shoes with a lot of girth and space inside the shoe. This will provide more flexibility.

Shoes that should fit include: wider shoes and boots, low cut loafers, suede shoes (leather is softer) and Chelsea boots.

flat arch

Flat Arch

The least common of all feet, a low instep, leaves the wearer with the most problems as shoes are often created to accommodate medium-to-high insteps.

Because a foot of this nature is very low in height, it requires a shoe that is less voluminous and shallower in depth.

Models that are more accommodating to this problem than others include: high-cut loafers and touch fastening shoes.

Medium Arch

For those lucky enough to have a medium arch, finding the right shoe model is easy. Nearly every shoe will accommodate your normal feet, and the only thing you need to look out for is that the shoe model was made to a normal standard.

Anatomic & Co crafts shoes that are created with Anatomic Gel Technology. This allows the soles of the shoes to be incredibly flexible, bouncy and comfortable.

The soles and insoles also have a memory, so once you take your shoes off and leave them to rest, they go back to their original shape ready to look after your feet the next day.
