In our Style Spotlight this week we take a look back at a fashion icon of the past, Sir Roger Moore, as he celebrates his 87th birthday this month. Born in 1927 he established himself in the TV & Film industry throughout the 50s and 60s, leading him to his career change role in the Saint before moving on to one of the most in demand roles of all time, that of 007.
Becoming known for his combination of wit and sophistication in his roles, Roger Moore has undoubtedly stood out as a cultural style icon.
Most famous as Mr James Bond, Moore served as the longest standing actor in the role and starred in a total of seven films. Roger spent most of his time in this role draped in suits that were nipped and tucked to perfection by tailors Douglas Hayward and Cyril Castles.
These suits attracted attention from other famous style icons including the likes of Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra who famously complimented Moore on the cut of his overcoats. His sophisticated look was finished off with a slick pair of black shoes, similar to our Anatomic & Co Manduri Derby and were always polished to perfection.
It wasn’t just his time spent as the suave James Bond that Roger Moore became a style icon, showcasing an impressive number of iconic looks throughout various roles over the years. The safari jacket worn in the 1965 episode of the Saint put Moore ahead in the style stakes, before Yves Saint Laurent in the late 60s made it a fashion statement of the time.
Off the screen, Roger Moore had a laidback style that made him as effortlessly cool as his on screen characters. Un-buttoned shirts, light coloured jeans and casual ankle boots with prominent creasing, evidently showing years of hard work, adventure and travel. Happy Birthday Roger Moore, a worthy focus of our style spotlight.
