Manaus is a city in Brazil and the capital of the Amazonas state, which has a population of approximately 2.5 million. It is a very common holiday destination in Brazil and being located next to the Amazon rainforest there is an incredible variety of wildlife to be seen, therefore making it the perfect destination for nature enthusiasts. Manaus also boasts the Amazonas Opera house that seats 700 people. The opera house itself is made from Italian Marble, French glass and European bricks.
Manaus was only made into a city in 1848, it originated as the Fort of São José do Rio Negro in 1669 and was later made into a town in 1882 where it was given it’s official name of ‘Manaus’ which means “mother of the gods”, before it was then finally made into a city in 1848. The city of Manaus is located on Rio Negro for a few miles before it meets the Rio Solimões which then forms the Amazon River. Both of these rivers flow side by side for many miles without mixing until they finally come together to create the “Meeting of the Waters” and legend has it that they never mix.
